about

This is a collection of soundscapes I recorded on the border between South Africa and Botswana in 2016. It was just before the start of the rainy season and birds were incredibly vocal, especially at dawn and dusk. Back then I wasn't doing much drop rig recording so I had to go out at 3 am so I could set up and press record in the dark before the birds would start singing.

While the locations in this part of the world are pretty similar when it comes to species distribution, their acoustics vary significantly. Water holes have a generally open sound while dry riverbeds have great acoustics. Woodland edges create nice reflective spaces too, although not as pronounced as riverbeds.

The recordings may sound chaotic at first, but give them a few listens and you'll start to sense a beautiful polyrhythm. These birds have evolved in harmony with one another, occupying different slices in the soundscape both with regards to time and frequency spectrum. The beauty of their calls is apparent immediately but the underlying complexity requires immersion to reveal itself.
